First Steps
Christianity has been given many faces over the years through television, religion, and the personal experiences of those around you. What we would like you to know is that no matter what you have heard, seen or experienced in your life, the beginning of Christianity involves one thing: Your relationship to Jesus Christ. Becoming a Christian does not equate to ritualistic behavior or repetetive church experience. Quite the opposite!
1. Admit you need help. A sick person needs to admit to a doctor their symptoms in order for the doctor to help them. An alcoholic or drug addict needs to submit to conseling and rehabilitation in order to recover fully. Admitting you need something more than yourself in life is a big step. It involves setting our pride aside and saying “You know what, I tried life my way, and it’s not working.” Admit that you are indeed a sinner in need of a savior who will cleanse you and rescue you.
2. Speak to God about this heartfelt need and confess your sins according to Romans 10:9-10 —that he died for our sins, was buried and rose again on the third day, you will be saved! Romans 10:9-10 is very clear on the basic understanding of how to first come to the place where Jesus is an important person in your life:
“That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”
This is the first and critical step. The rest is learning, living and experiencing Christ in order to build your own personal relationship. Like a relationship with any human on earth, it takes time and understanding to make it great. Life with Jesus is no exception. It takes time in prayer, reading the Bible and fellowship with others in order to expand your understanding of Christian life and the Word of God.
3. Get involved immediately with a solid, Bible-believing church. Do your homework and pray that God would lead you to the right church. Being a part of a church family has many great benefits which you will discover once you get plugged in. Worship, fellowship and teaching are the primary purposes of a church, all of which will help you to grow and share your own faith with others.
If you feel in your heart this is something you should do right now, and if you can believe according to what you just read in Romans 10:9-10, pray this simple prayer and let Jesus make your life brand new starting right now.
“Father, forgive me of my sins. I confess all that I have done in my life against your will for me. I admit I am in need of a savior, so I ask you now to be Lord of my life and to come into my heart to abide with me. I believe you died for my sins, were buried, and resurrected on the third day. Thank you for loving me and dying for me. Help me from this day forward to be the Christian you desire for me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
If you prayed this prayer today, we rejoice with you. However, we know you will have many questions and need to speak with someone. Feel free to call or email us at 1 888 850 0997 or to info@riveroflifefellowship.org. Thank you for taking the time today and God bless you!
